The PatientEvolution Story
The PatientEvolution Story
It all started in 2005…
...When Adam Pick, the founder of PatientEvolution, was diagnosed with aortic stenosis – a life threatening form of heart disease. Adam was told that he needed surgery in the next 6 months or his heart would fail him.
“Going through cardiac surgery was an emotional and physical rollercoaster,” Adam recalls. “I felt alone. The educational materials on the web were terrible. And getting in touch with my medical team and insurance provider was beyond frustrating. I was lost.”
After successful heart surgery, Adam decided to “pay it forward.” With a $199 investment, Adam started a blog at HeartValveSurgery.com (HVS) to educate and empower patients. The next thing he knew, HVS grew from a 3-page website to a 10,000-page resource of educational services to help patients before, during and after heart surgery.

Today, HVS is sponsored by 50+ hospitals and leading medical companies. HVS has helped more than 10 million people fight heart disease, and 300,000 people (and growing) follow Adam across social media.
“It was a wonderful fluke that I could combine my career in technology with patient advocacy,” says Adam. During his 25-year career, Adam worked in hardware with Dell Computers, in software with SAP/ Ariba, and in consulting for Apple, Hewlett-Packard, GE Health and Phillips Healthcare. “I was constantly looking for tech solutions of patient frustrations.”
Then, in 2015…
...Adam noticed that many of his clients – doctors, hospitals and medical companies – were struggling with patient recruitment for commercial therapies and clinical trials. At the same time, Adam continually heard from patients who were unhappy with their access to top-notch medical care.
“A light went off when I realized the gap between patient awareness, engagement, activation and, ultimately, thoughtful patient recruitment,” Adam recalls.
Adam and Katie Bal, the Vice President of PatientEvolution, immediately went to a whiteboard to create their ultimate patient education, patient recruitment and patient lifecycle management platform.

“We spent days dreaming up a patient recruitment flow that would benefit each stakeholder in the therapeutic value chain,” Katie remembers. “Our goal was to flip the script on recruitment. We wanted to focus on the patient -- not the therapy.”
As you can see in the PatientEvolution case studies, the results of this novel approach to patient recruitment have been extraordinary for patients, their doctors, their clinical sites, and trial sponsors.
“We are converting over 20% of enrollment for a really difficult protocol,” Katie notes. “I’m thrilled with these results; it will help more patients, doctors and medical companies learn about the value of direct-to-patient programs.”
Although PatientEvolution was officially formed in 2015, the company operated quietly (in stealth mode) under the name Clinical Cardiac for three years. On June 1, 2018, the company officially became PatientEvolution.
“Our mission is to help patients evolve from sickness to health,” says Adam. “If we harness that mission, we will help transform an industry that also needs to evolve.”
What will this mean for new patients who need medical help?
“I would have loved the PatientEvolution resources when I was going through my surgery,” continues Adam. “If I can help others avoid the pitfalls I experienced – it will all be worthwhile.”
